Food Security

By Marc Deeley

Security is a hot topic in these crazy times. From people trying to blow up airliners to our own increasing paranoia and 'insecurities' in an ever uncertain world. Security is also big business, people make massive profits from our insecurity, they may also create the insecurity in the first place, and sell us back security - just take Iraq or Afghanistan as the perfect examples of our security paradox.
Clearly the world is not a safer, or more secure place.
The proliferation of nuclear weapons has certainly not made our world a safer place as we now have more dangerous weapons in the hands of more dangerous people.
There is a type of security that interests me more than the other, more obvious definitions.
Food security. The planets ability to feed itself using the resources we have, in a sustainable/renewable way.
It's something I've done a fair bit of research on over the years and it never fails to amaze me how the most nutritious source of food on the planet is still subject to controls intended to prevent narcotic cultivation.
Industrial hemp produces a food source that can be grown at every latitude (excluding those with permafrost) and is unique in terms of nutritional content.
The work I have done in this area to-date convinces me that global production of this resource can help play an important role to improve global food security, while relieving hunger, poverty and disease in the poorest agricultural regions of the world

thanks to everyone so far for their thoughts, all comments on content will be gratefully received. Best wishes - Marc

Thank you for the great post. Your article cleared my mind of any ambiguity. As I looked at the threatening news of today through the lens of Food security, what is what was made the obvious. I recalled the main ingredient of cooking that has the power to transform any quick snack into the lovely dainty. That's the love. It could heal any deceases of society, yet did I opened my heart to that light already? or still muse on what should be done by other?

Food security is very important to me too. In fact, food security and self-sufficiency was one of the prime motivators for my move to the 2 acres of land I now live on.

Hemp is an amazing plant, and in addition to the most awesome nutrition a different variety can be used for fiber, to make beautiful clothes, etc. Best of all hemp has very few natural pests, so there is absolutely NO need for agricultural chemical poisons to be used. Imagine that! So that's another very powerful industry that's probably lobbying to keep it banned.

Here in New Zealand I think you need go jump through all kinds of legal and bureaucratic hoops to grow it, but then... it can't be sold as human food! Only as animal feed. The animals do love it, my dogs think it's the best treat. But it can't be sold for human consumption... the irony just makes me speechless.
